Finland’s restrictions on Russian tourists came into effect just on Friday.

On Friday, for example, only about 1,500 Russian passengers entered Finland at the border crossing points in Southeast Finland, i.e. the busiest places, while a week ago on Friday the number was still around 7,000.

The situation seemed to calm down on Saturday as well. By early Saturday evening, a total of 1,300 travelers entered Finland at the border crossing points in Southeast Finland. A total of 103 people were denied entry. 82 people applied for temporary protection and two people applied for asylum.

According to the communication of the Border Guard, it is estimated that about 80 percent of those who entered the country in the last 24 hours are Russians.

In chapters it can now be seen that according to the government’s decision in principle on Thursday, the border was practically closed to Russian tourists.

The justification for the decision was endangering international relations. Russians can still enter the country, for example for family reasons, to study and work.

“The reduction in arrivals is similar to what we knew how to estimate,” says the commander captain Seppo Häkkinen From the Border Guard.

He believes that when information about Finland’s restrictions spreads in Russia, it will further reduce the number of arrivals. The number of people returning to Russia is also at normal levels.

“Yesterday Friday there were more departures than arrivals.”

About 1,700 Russians arrived across the land border and more than 2,000 left. According to Häkkinen, the situation is stable and peaceful.

Asylum seekers in the southeast, thirteen were registered on Friday, and more than fifty people seeking temporary protection.

At the same time, of course, denials of access have also multiplied since a week ago. On Friday, there were already 249 of them at all crossing points.

The same message about traffic calming down was also heard from other units of the border guard that monitor the eastern border on Saturday.

The North Karelia border guard said there was a clear decrease in traffic volumes compared to yesterday, the traffic in the Kainuu border guard was quiet even before the restriction that came into effect on Friday, as well as at the border crossing points in Lapland.
