Four people arrived in Finland illegally across the eastern border by land from the Russian side on Sunday evening, the Border Guard said on Monday.

The situation happened in the Suokumaanjärvi area of Lappeenranta in the evening at 20:30.

The patrol of the Southeastern Finland Border Guard spotted the border crossers immediately after crossing. When the patrol spoke to them, it appeared that they were seeking asylum in Finland.

In recent months, the border guards have stepped up their surveillance on the eastern border. Especially Russia’s “partial” implementation of the movement has created a threat that the number of illegal crossers coming through the forests could increase.

However, the worst threats have not materialized, states the Border Guard of Southeast Finland. The border guards have, for example, mapped the most vulnerable and most likely places on the border where immigrants might come from.

Even in the case of Sunday evening, the essential information is that the patrol rounded up the visitors immediately. The border is now obviously being monitored effectively.

Border Patrol states that it cannot say anything else about Sunday’s arrivals either, because they have applied for asylum in Finland. The Finnish Immigration Service Migri is responsible for the continuation of the process.

There have already been a few illegal crossings of the eastern border this autumn. In mid-September, the Kainuu border guard arrested three people in Kuusamo’s Kuntivaara.

At the end of September, one person crossed the border on foot in Kitee in the Matkalami area, where he was caught by the North Karelia border guard. The guard received tips from the locals about the border crosser.

Similarly, at the end of September, four foreign people crossed the border in Kuusamo, near the village of Tammela. The patrol of the Kainuu border guard caught them.

In all these cases, the persons have immediately applied for asylum in Finland.

The border commissioners also contact the border commissioners on the Russian side after the incidents and tell them about what happened.

In any case, the number of asylum seekers from Russia is very small compared to Ukrainians who have applied for temporary protection in Finland. According to the most recent statistics, there are more than 42,000 of them.

According to the Finnish Immigration Service, the processing time for an application for temporary protection is about a week.
