He pointed out that the great potentials, opportunities and challenges cannot be dealt with and unleashed the full energy potential in the eastern Mediterranean region, without the cooperation of producers, consumers and transit countries to develop various infrastructure projects for the circulation of gas, hydrogen and renewable energies in the region and other markets, and that this is preferable during the current period, especially since Members and observers of the Forum provide a platform for consultation in order to identify consensus for the best exploitation of these potentials.
The minister added that although natural gas will continue to play an important role at the regional and international levels, cooperation and consensus among the forum member states in a just transition towards green energy is one of the most important priorities of the forum.
He pointed out that the year 2022 witnessed the holding of many international conferences and events, including the COP27 Climate Summit, which Egypt hosted last month in Sharm El-Sheikh on behalf of the continent of Africa.
Al-Mulla pointed out that the forum achieved tangible success during the emission reduction day, represented by the announcement of the “Reducing Natural Gas Emissions Initiative in the Region,” noting that one of the requirements for a successful energy transition is the availability of energy supplies, and therefore it is important to discuss ways to provide more energy sources at reasonable prices, including Supports global growth and sustainability, and that the report on reducing natural gas emissions in the Eastern Mediterranean region is an important first step in this process, as it lays the foundations for the current period and future directions of the Forum as a pioneering model for reaching the ambitious goals of reducing gas emissions in the Eastern Mediterranean, while highlighting the required path for implementation.
For her part, Natasha Pilides, the Cypriot Minister of Energy and chair of the current session of the forum, announced the handover of the presidency of the new session of the forum in 2023 to Egypt, expressing her appreciation for the Egyptian support during the Cypriot presidency of the forum and the efforts made to achieve its goals.
In her speech, the Cypriot Minister of Energy also referred to her country’s initiative to establish a technical and scientific committee to support the objectives of the forum’s work strategy and its role in mitigating the effects of climate change, enhancing the carbon footprint of the energy sector, and providing studies for forum members, stressing that our current goal is to expand the role of the forum in the region with regard to Related to natural gas, decarbonization efforts in the eastern Mediterranean, and diversification of energy sources.
The minister also reviewed the achievements of the forum and its influential activities during the year 2022 and the presentation of important studies, especially with regard to energy transition and carbon removal, as participation in the Sharm El-Sheikh climate conference was an opportunity to present the important study presented by the forum on carbon removal.
