Tremor struck Kunar and was felt in Kabul; country is recovering from another quake that left at least 1,000 dead in June
An earthquake hit the city of Kunar, Afghanistan, at dawn on Monday (5.Sep.2022) and left 8 dead.
Government spokesman Mawlawi Mohammad Hanaf told the state news agency Bakhtar that dozens of houses are destroyed and that the number of deaths could increase.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake registered a magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter Scale. The spokesman said the tremor was also felt in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan.
On June 22, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake killed at least 1,000 people and injured more than 3,000 across the country.
