ESA finally confirmed that theE3 2023 will be heldset for the second week of June, complete with a titanic “triple A reveal and shocking world premieres”, but we don’t really know what to expect from this new organization, considering how things have changed in the meantime. On the other hand, that the one imposed by ESA at its annual fair was a temporary interruption was clear, given that it was born from the prolonged Covid emergency, but in the meantime the communication of the industry has profoundly changed and, to say the true, E3 was beginning to be somewhat anachronistic for some time. However, it is true that at the end of the Summer Game Fest week could easily be translated into a new E3, it remains to be seen whether the major players who have been part of this are planning to return to ESA jurisdiction or not. since in the meantime the organization of Geogg Keighley and his companions will certainly not stand by and watch.
On the other hand, the direct involvement of ReedPop, the production company behind huge events such as PAX, New York Comic Con, Star Wars Celebration and others seems to demonstrate a willingness to step into a new gear, but the doubts remain. Sony will certainly continue on its independent path with communication to the public and Nintendo the same: if State of Play or Nintendo Direct can still be considered within a widespread organization such as a Summer Game Fest, the same can probably not be said. for a specific and more centralized event such as an E3.
The risk, therefore, is to find yourself with a plethora of events detached from each other and all placed in the same period of the year, certainly creating a magical beginning of summer for video game fans but also a lot of confusion in the collection and dissemination of information. , perhaps with physical events to participate in scattered around and perhaps even overlapping.
The game will largely be played on the greats names present, but given the consolidated modus operandi we feel that Sony and Nintendo will lean towards their events that could, at the limit, be included within the chain of presentations sponsored by Keighley, while perhaps only Microsoft could remain on the side of the ESA, by virtue of the old consolidated relationships and the historical habit of the company to organize a big presentation event at this time of the year. The risk of dispersion is however very high and on the other hand even the summer events of this year, beyond precisely State of Play, Xbox & Bethesda Showcase and Nintendo Direct, are not that they have brought incredible news.
So is there still room for an E3 2023? It is very early to evaluate, but if the Summer Game Fest continues to have this aggressive approach, winning the favor of various global publishers and developers and in light of the changes that have been going on for years in the communication of some of the main players in the industry, it is to think that the risk of information dispersion in a thousand streams of events is very high. On the other hand, the fair could still have considerable importance in its more traditional form, that is, an opportunity for professionals to meet and possibly to negotiate business. We will see, in any case, a June 2023 is probably waiting for us, really full of news on the video game front.
