If the free practice verdict is confirmed by qualifying and the race, the tenth round of the Formula E 2021 promises to be a very tight challenge with drivers and teams very close and ready to give a great show on the track.
After a year of absence due to a pandemic, the Electric world is back to New York for the fourth edition of the US appointment. As usual, two ePrix are scheduled for the weekend, with Race-1 starting in a few hours in Brooklyn.
The only stars and stripes team in the league, the team Dragon, shows up on the streets home confirming the line-up took to the track in Puebla, with Joel Eriksson who will join Sergio Sette Camara for the rest of the season after the break with Nico Muller.
After the two free practice sessions, Sebastien stands out on the time table Buemi, who brought his own Nissan in front of everyone over the PL2. The Swiss, author of a 1’09 ″ 386, preceded by nothing Maximilian Gunther, second with his BMW by only 31 thousandths. Third, at 57 thousandths, Pascal Wehrlein, who put his Porsche ahead of the Venturi of the championship leader, Edoardo Mortara, who stopped at 98 thousandths from the former electric champion.
Gaps less contained for the rest of the group – in a second they are there in any case 19 pilots – with Nato, de Vries, Rowland, Vandoorne, Vergne and Lotterer completing the top ten. Thirteenth place for Robin Frijns, second in the championship and leader of the PL1. Only 19th Mitch Evans, on Jaguar, at the end of two very complicated free practice sessions for the Jaguar.
In fact, Sam Bird did not take part in PL2, who had parked his Jaguar against the barriers in the first session. A accident – the British driver touched the wall on the inside of turn 14 and finished his race against the guards on the outside – which ended the 45 minutes of PL1 prematurely.
A bad misstep for Bird, eleventh in the championship with 49 points: after the excellent start with the victory in Race-2 in Diriyah and the second place in Race-1 in Rome, the Jaguar rider has lost his last six outings he found the top-10 only once (7th in Monte Carlo). The first qualifications in the Big Apple already sound like a last call for the 34-year-old from London.
The best time in the PL1 – turns on a damp track due to morning downpours – so it was Robin’s prerogative Frijns, on the Audi e-tron FE07 of the Virgin team. The Dutchman stopped the clock on1’10 “282, 95 thousandths faster than Oliver Turvey (NIO). Third at almost half a second (+0 ″ 419) Maximilian Gunther, on Bmw, preceding the winner of the first Puebla E-Prix, Lucas di Grassi (+0 ″ 681).
Same time for Wehrlein and Eriksson (+0 ″ 688), with Vandoorne, Evans, Buemi and Sette Camara closing the top ten. Start with a 19th time trial for Edoardo Mortara, 140 thousandths slower than Norman Nato’s other Venturi-Mercedes (18th).
The qualifying of the E-Prix New York is scheduled at 18.30 Italian time. The race will start at 22.34.
