During the launch of the new crossover Qashqai Nissan now in its third generation developed on the new one CMF-C platform A new engine has also been announced in addition to the mild hybridwhich arrives on the Qashqai starting in the summer 2022.
It is a new electrified powertrain, the e-Power enginea powertrain consisting of a turbo gasoline with generator function current which charges the lithium-ion battery (lighter and smaller) and powers the electric traction motorthe one that actually moves the car.
e-Power Nissan, the serial / parallel hybrid
The e-Power propulsion system it is not really a novelty in the Nissan house that had already introduced it in 2016 on the Note, the best-selling car in Japan in 2018. It is a “Serial hybrid” with electric and thermal engine which work independently and in series. In fact it can also be called a mixture serial/parallel because in some moments battery and heat generator they supply the electric motor in parallel with the current.
Of Nissan e-Power systems over 500,000 have been sold in Japan (but with the thermal of 1,200 cc) which we find as well as on Note also Serena e-Power. Experience already gained on its operation, breakdowns and tuning that will be a guarantee.
The system is similar to that used by BMW on the i3 Range Extender, Opel Ampera and Chevrolet Volt.
e-Power engine coming to the Nissan Qashqai
The new Qashqai therefore marks the European debut of this system e-Power propulsion on the “crossover” consisting of a lithium ion batterya 1,500 turbo petrol engine with 157 hp to variable compression ratio which acts as electricity generatora inverter it’s a 190 hp electric motor (140 kW) of dimensions and power similar to those of the others electric vehicles of the Nissan range.
The Qashqai e-Power it does not have a plug-in rechargeall theenergy is produced exclusively by the motor generator board that it can simultaneously charge the battery and power the electric motor.
It is a different frontier of electrification with electric power generation on board with the benefits of an electric car in terms of driving pleasure on a car not burdened by the mass of large lithium-ion batteries.
Nissan e-Power electric motor how does it work?
In the e-Power system the petrol engine is used exclusively for generate electricitywhile the wheels are driven alone from the electric motor. This means that the heat engine always works in its own optimal range, maximizing fuel efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions. The propulsive thrust is entirely provided by the electric motor which draws the current from the battery or directly from the generator.
Thanks to this solution, the gasoline engine almost always works at optimal rpm: obviously it slightly increases the revs when you ask for more power. This change in revs will however be gradual with less sudden transients: the greater current necessary for starting, acceleration or to tackle a climb is immediately supplied by the lithium battery which acts as a “buffer” and then the support of the motor generator arrives.
Nissan Qashqai e-Power traction battery
The data have not yet been formalized on the expected traction battery capacity on the Qashqai e-Power but we can assume that it is of very small size like the one mounted on the Note, that is 1.5 kWh but it could also be slightly increased. However, this lowers the cost of the accumulator.
How to drive the Qashqai e-Power
The Quashqai e-Power practically drives like an electric car but with a slight noise from the 1,500 petrol engine. Obviously it has the regenerative braking which allows you to recover even a small portion of electricity. It has three driving modes, “S Mode”, “Normal Mode” and “ECO Mode”.
The new Qashqai e-POWER also makes use of technology e-Pedal Stepwhich allows you to accelerate and brake using the accelerator pedal only. The system, which is activated via a special button on the center console, is very useful and comfortable in driving situations characterized by frequent speed variations, thus preventing the driver from constantly moving his foot between the brake and accelerator.
When the accelerator pedal is released, the e-Pedal Step brakes the car with a deceleration of up to 0.2 g, just enough to make the stop lights come on. The system reduces the speed, but without stopping the car completely, this to facilitate parking maneuvers and at low speeds.
ADVANTAGES you never stay on foot, you don’t have to worry about electric charging.
👎 DISADVANTAGES for electric purists is not exactly the best since it “rumbles” and emits (reduced) emissions at the exhaust.
Below you can see the differences between an electric car, the Nissan with e-Power engine and a traditional hybrid.
