Tragedy
He was run over last Saturday during the last race of the SSP300 Superbike championship held at the Portimao circuit and died three days later in hospital
The young Dutch driver Victor Steeman, 22, died Tuesday night as a result of injuries sustained last Saturday in an accident at the Portimao circuit, in the Portuguese Algarve. Steeman was contesting the last World Superbike race in the SSP300 category when he was hit by another bike and suffered serious injuries that cost him his life three days later.
“Something has happened that we have always been afraid of as parents of a motorcycle racer. Our Victor couldn’t win his last race. Despite the excruciating loss and pain, we are proud to share that our hero, in his death, was able to save five other people as an organ donor. We want to thank everyone who has joined us these past few days. We are going to miss Victor very much,” explained the family of the ill-fated pilot in a statement.
Steeman, a Kawasaki rider, lost control of his motorcycle in a corner and another rider who was arriving hit him, causing polytrauma and various head injuries. He was treated at the circuit and rushed by helicopter to a hospital in Faro, but the doctors could not save him. Steeman appeared in the last race of the SSP300 championship with mathematical possibilities for the title, which was finally won by the Spanish Álvaro Díaz.
Steeman’s death comes less than a week after British Superbike rider Chrissy Rouse, 26, died on 6 October from head injuries after being hit by another rider in a race at Donington Circuit. Park, in England.
