Seven people, including three Dutchmen, were injured in a serious accident during a jeep safari in the Algarve on Friday afternoon. A woman from France has died, writes the Portuguese newspaper Observador.
The jeep fell, with its occupants, into a ravine. It happened in Alte, an area that is difficult to access. The victims had to be removed from the area on foot by rescue teams.
In the jeep were a Dutch family with two girls aged 10 and 13 and a French family. Of the seven injured, five are seriously injured, including three children. The 13-year-old Dutch girl was seriously injured and transported by helicopter to a hospital in Faro. The same goes for her 49-year-old father. The youngest 10-year-old girl was taken to Faro by ambulance with her mother.
The mother of the French family has died. According to Portuguese media, she was pregnant. The 15-year-old son had to be freed from under the jeep. The boy and his father were also taken to hospital in Faro. All the victims, except the driver, were foreigners on holiday in the Algarve.
The incident took place around 5:30 PM in the afternoon. It took some time for emergency services to arrive. Nearly 60 rescuers were involved, supported by 24 vehicles and a helicopter. Behind the wheel was a man of Portuguese nationality. He was not seriously injured, but was taken to hospital.
