The Chambers of Commerce of USA (AmCham) and Canada (CanCham) in Mexico agreed this Wednesday that the three countries must resolve their differences through dialogue without reaching a dispute panel, in the midst of the consultations for the energetic politics Mexican and other disagreements.
The presidents of the chambers warned that wasting the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (USMCA) would be “throwing overboard” the possibility of building prosperity forward.
“The dilemma would mean a destruction of value already generated in the past and would be throwing overboard the possibility, the opportunity cost of not building forward,” said Enrique Zorrilla, president of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Mexico.
United States and Canada last July requested consultations under the USMCA by nationalist policies in the energy sector of Mexicoaccused of prioritizing state companies to the detriment of foreign ones, which are added to other labor and interpretation disputes in the Automotive industry by the rules of origin.
Vladimiro de la Mora, president of AmCham Mexico, said that the discussion should not be about whether or not Mexico is part of the USMCA by different interests, but “how to accelerate that integration (commercial and economic)”.
“In any relationship there will always be different ideas, different understandings, but the important thing is that there is that dialogue to be able to resolve it,” said the leader of more than 1,200 American companies in Mexico affiliated with AmCham.
De la Mora also argued that “our sustainable future going forward will depend on this relationship and we need to continue accelerating that integration” between the three North American countries.
Commercial relationship between Mexico, Canada and the USA is irreversible
The president of CamCham, which houses 280 of the 6,000 Canadian companies in Mexico, assured that the commercial relationship between the three countries is “irreversible” and “is deepening.”
Zorrilla recalled that, in 2021, the USMCA it represented 83% of Mexico’s exports to North American partners, 46% of Mexican imports and 65% of our total trade in the region.
Likewise, De la Mora abounded that the relationship commercial Come in Mexico and the United Statesin the first half of 2022, amounted to 2,000 million dollars a day, for which he stated that it is “one of the largest globally”.
Clear laws to strengthen the region as a global pillar
The president of AmCham Mexico also stated that the promotion of the country, its resources and its potential, as well as “the consistent application of clear laws” can attract greater investment in energy to Mexico and position North America as a leader in the global energy transition.
“It is a long-term relationship and in the energy area we need to start talking about the North American pole and the North American pole has everything to be the leader in the global energy transition,” said De la Mora.
