On Thursday night, before the 2022 MotoGP season kicks off with the Qatar Grand Prix, Motorsport.com reported that Francesco Bagnaia and his teammate Jack Miller had homologated 2021 engines in an advanced version.
In tests in Malaysia, Ducati had brought three different engine specifications for Bagnaia: a 2021, an evolution of the 2021 one and the 2022 version.
With the 2022 engine reportedly having more aggressive power delivery, Bagnaia (and Miller by regulation enforcement) chose the more advanced specification of the previous engine for the new season.
However, Davide Tardozzi tried to clarify the situation a little, pointing out that the 2022 engine was not rejected, but that the two factory drivers believe that the evolved 2021 is more suited to their driving style.
“I don’t know why people have to say Ducati is wrong every time,” Tardozzi told MotoGP.com. “Pecco didn’t say the 2022 engine is wrong and he wanted 2021. This is a bitch. I mean this, because we just gave it a different specification.”
“There is the possibility of following the driver’s driving style through the engine, and this engine is close to the driving style of Pecco and Jack. The other guys are happy with the other specification, that’s just what happened.”
“We know that another brand in Sepang had also brought three different specifications. Why not go and ask him which one Marc Marquez chose?”.

Tardozzi then confirmed that Jorge Martin, Johann Zarco and Luca Marini, who all have a Desmosedici GP22 at their disposal, will instead go ahead with the 2022 specification.
Since Ducati does not have the concessions, for this season it will no longer be able to modify the engine and will have to live with these choices until the last race of the year.
Continuing to talk about the engine theme, Tardozzi added: “We are happy with the choice of the rider and I think we have given the riders the best chance. Let’s see how the season starts and how it will end. But it will be very tough, because there are so many bikes. very competitive “.
