The Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai has urged vehicle drivers to avoid driving while feeling tired or sleepy, especially in the holy month of Ramadan, in which concentration levels decrease among some drivers due to changes that occur in the body as a result of fasting, warning that a five-second nap is tantamount to blind driving. For a distance of 180 meters or more, according to a study conducted by the German Safety Council published in 2020.
The Authority is implementing an awareness campaign to deliver important guidance messages to drivers during the holy month of Ramadan, as part of the annual plan for the Authority’s traffic awareness programs and activities based on the traffic safety strategy in the Emirate of Dubai.
The Authority urged drivers to embrace the virtues and advantages of the Holy Month, which must leave an impact on individuals’ behaviour, including adherence to traffic rules and respect for the rights of road users.
As part of its awareness plans for the traffic safety strategy during the year 2023, the Authority implemented more than 270 awareness events that included all members of society in order to contribute to achieving the goals and objectives of the traffic safety strategy, the most prominent of which is that “every human being’s life is unique and irreplaceable,” as these measures contributed to achieving Targets of the traffic safety strategy performance indicators in the Emirate of Dubai and reducing deaths by about 93% during the period 2007 – 2023, which has made the Emirate of Dubai one of the best cities in the world in the field of traffic safety.
The Authority has approved many awareness-raising activities during the month of Ramadan in coordination and cooperation with the Ministry of Interior and traffic awareness partners in the Emirate of Dubai, with the aim of delivering awareness and guidance messages to the largest possible number of community members, through field activities and social media channels affiliated with the Authority and its traffic awareness partners.
The Authority also printed advertising banners at the entrances to iftar tents spread across Dubai, containing awareness messages for pedestrians and drivers, while awareness flyers were printed and distributed as part of iftar meals distributed to target groups, most notably Dubai taxi and public bus drivers, in addition to truck drivers and some road users, in cooperation with Many government institutions and private companies, including the Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities in Dubai, Damac Properties, Tokyo Marine Insurance Company, Bin Yaber Driving Institute, and Tristar Company.
Awareness messages in the month of Ramadan depend on alerting drivers to the importance of concentration while driving at all times, especially in the month of Ramadan, where the difference in sleep and work schedules affects the state of concentration among those who are fasting, which is clearly evident at those times when the employee returns from work, as it decreases. The authority confirmed that the truck traffic ban will be amended during the month of Ramadan on the E11 axis from the Sharjah border to Intersection No. 7 of Sheikh Zayed Road (passing through Al Ittihad Street, Sheikh Rashid Street, and Sheikh Zayed Road), in addition to the city center in Deira and Bur Dubai, from 7:00 p.m. AM to 11:00 PM, instead of the timing (06:00 AM – 10:00 PM), in addition to amending the ban during the morning period in the streets to which the ban times apply three times a day, so that the ban begins at 07:30 AM. Until 09:30 am instead of the timing on the rest of the days of the year (06:30 – 08:30). And from: 02:00 pm until 04:00 pm instead of the timing on the rest of the days of the year (01:00 pm – 03:00 pm).
