The Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai and Careem launched the second phase of the bicycle rental service (bicycle sharing), by adding 950 pedal-assisted bicycles (pedal-powered and energy-generated bicycles), and 95 stations, bringing the number of bicycles to 1,750 bicycles and 175 stations distributed in different areas of Dubai, becoming the first project of its kind to fully share pedal-assisted bicycles around the world.
The authority stated that this stage is part of a project that includes the provision of 3,500 bicycles distributed in 350 stations in the city of Dubai, which is being implemented in different stages, indicating that the total number of bicycle trips completed until the end of last February amounted to one million and 592 thousand trips.
The Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, Mattar Al Tayer, expressed his happiness with the success of the joint project between the RTA and Careem in providing bicycle services and the increasing demand of residents and visitors to practice and use bicycles, as one of the alternative and sustainable means of transportation.
He stressed that this initiative supports the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make Dubai the best city for life in the world and achieve happiness for the population, and the directives of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai Chairman of the Executive Council, to transform Dubai into a bike-friendly city where international best practices in infrastructure development are applied. For his part, the managing director of Careem’s mobility sector, Basil Al-Nahlawi, said that “the company is expanding the (Careem Bike) project in response to the great demand for bicycles, and the increasing demand from residents and visitors to use bicycles for transportation, whether to go to work or simply entertainment”.
