The design of the modern pavilion of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority at Expo 2020 Dubai is in line with the efforts of the authority to reformulate the concept of service institutions and their contribution to the efforts to transform Dubai into the smartest and happiest city in the world, where the authority focuses on the concepts of sustainability and future energy.
DEWA, as the official sustainable energy partner for Expo 2020 Dubai, has allocated 4.26 billion dirhams to support infrastructure projects for electricity and water networks at the exhibition using the latest smart systems. The authority decided to harness all efforts, expertise and capabilities to achieve the vision of the wise country’s leadership to host the best edition in the history of the world fair, which extends for more than 150 years, and to make the experience of visitors to Dubai an unforgettable one.
The authority’s pavilion is located at Expo 2020 Dubai, within the sustainability area, where visitors can experience a unique experience and learn about the authority’s most prominent projects, smart services and innovative initiatives, especially in the field of renewable and clean energy, and learn about its efforts aimed at relying on the technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution to replace and change the model Operational service for service institutions, and the transformation into the first digital institution in the world.
Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Energy Complex
The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Energy Complex is the largest solar energy project in the world in one location according to the independent product system developed by the authority and approved for public-private partnership. The complex’s production capacity is currently 1,310 megawatts using photovoltaic solar panels, and the authority has 1,850 megawatts under implementation using photovoltaic panels and concentrated solar power, with other future stages to reach 5,000 megawatts by 2030. The complex currently provides about 10% of the energy production capacity in Dubai. When completed, the complex will reduce more than 6.5 million tons of carbon emissions annually.
Thanks to the Independent Energy Producer (IPP) model, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority has obtained several world records in reducing solar energy prices, so that Dubai has become a benchmark for solar energy prices worldwide. After the success achieved by the authority in the independent energy producer projects in the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Energy Complex, it launched a seawater desalination project with a production capacity of 120 million gallons per day, using reverse osmosis technology to desalinate sea water using clean energy according to the independent water producer system. DEWA achieved a global achievement by obtaining the lowest global competitive price of $0.277 per cubic meter of desalinated water for this project.
green hydrogen project
Within its pavilion, DEWA highlights the “green hydrogen” project, the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa region to produce hydrogen using solar energy, and was implemented in cooperation between DEWA, Expo 2020 Dubai and Siemens Energy, in testing facilities. The Authority’s external facility is located in the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Energy Complex, and the pilot plant was built to be able to accommodate future applications and test platforms for the various uses of hydrogen, including transportation and industrial uses.
SpaceD program
The Authority’s Space D program aims to build the authority’s capabilities and qualify an Emirati cadre specialized in the use of space technologies in electricity and water networks, and to benefit from the techniques of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and its disruptive techniques in exchanging information through space communications and Earth observation techniques. The “Space D” project includes the launch of two satellites supporting the main satellite and specialists in communications and remote sensing to monitor the performance and efficiency of photovoltaic solar panels at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Energy Complex through special cameras located on the main satellite and study the impact of weather phenomena and climate change on Energy infrastructure and supplies, which enhance supply reliability and resource sustainability, and will be manufactured by Emirati hands at the Research and Development Center at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. The system includes a ground-based satellite station in the complex and ground transmitting stations that use Internet of Things and artificial intelligence technologies through sensors distributed at different locations in the network, which increases the efficiency and effectiveness of planning, operation and preventive maintenance work for production, transmission, distribution, smart grids and electric vehicle charging stations.
Digital Diwa
Digital DEWA, the digital arm of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, aims to become the first digital institution in the world, enhanced by autonomous systems for renewable energy and storage, with the expansion of the use of artificial intelligence and the provision of digital services. Digital DEWA focuses on four pillars: solar energy, energy storage, artificial intelligence, and digital services.
Solar Decathlon Competition
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority is organizing, during Expo 2020 Dubai, the “Solar Decathlon – Middle East” competition, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, within the framework of the partnership between DEWA and the Supreme Council. The public will be able to visit the Decathlon Village in the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park and see the homes in which the university teams are participating in the competition, from 11 to 25 November 2021.
The hydroelectric station in Hatta
The hydroelectric station in Hatta is a 250-megawatt stored hydroelectric power plant with a storage capacity of 1,500 megawatt-hours and a lifespan of up to 80 years. Within its pavilion at the exhibition, the authority allocates a platform for the World Green Economy Organization, which aims to promote the transition to a green economy and support countries and organizations seeking to achieve their green strategy and plans.
The World Green Economy Organization is scheduled to participate, along with the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, and in cooperation with elite leading organizations, including the United Nations Development Program, the United Nations Environment Program, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The World Bank Group is organizing the “Regional Climate Week 2022” for the countries of the Middle East and North Africa region, which will be hosted by the UAE on March 2-3, 2022, for the first time in the Middle East and North Africa region.
Dubai Summit and Hatta Sustainable Falls
The authority is also displaying, through its pavilion, two other projects being implemented in the “Hatta” area: “Dubai Summit” and “Hatta Sustainable Waterfalls”. The “Dubai Summit” project includes the construction of a 5.4-kilometre cable car to transport tourists from the Hatta Dam area to the Umm Al-Nsour summit in the Hatta region, the highest natural peak in the Emirate of Dubai, with an altitude of 1,300 meters above sea level. Hatta and the upper dam lake for the hydroelectric station project, passing through the mountain range until it reaches the summit of Umm Al-Nisour. As for the Hatta Sustainable Waterfalls project, it includes exploiting the slope of the upper dam, using it as a natural waterfall, creating a water stream along the parking lots below the dam, and developing the area and transforming it into recreational spaces, cafes and restaurants, so that this water can be collected at the end of the stream, recycled and pumped to the top of the slope. In addition to raising fish in the water stream, which is an element of attraction for children and families.

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai includes a model for the authority’s new main building, called Al Sheraa, which will be the tallest, largest and smartest zero-energy government building in the world. The total energy used in the building throughout the year is equal to or less than the energy that it produces. The building is designed to achieve the Platinum Green Building – Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating and WELL Silver Global Green Building Standards. The new DEWA building will be directly connected to the Dubai Metro, to encourage the use of public transportation, reduce traffic congestion and reduce the carbon footprint. World Energy Day activities
As part of its campaign for World Energy Day 2021, DEWA organized a series of events at its pavilion participating in Expo 2020 Dubai, to highlight the objectives of this initiative adopted by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. From 20 to 23 October, DEWA launched the “World Energy Day” awareness competition, at its pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, in the Sustainability Zone, to introduce visitors to the Authority’s most prominent projects and pioneering and innovative initiatives that support the pillars of World Energy Day, where the winners of the competition had the opportunity He won valuable prizes, and DEWA cooperated with a group of influencers on social media to promote World Energy Day, and urged the public to adopt the best sustainable environmental practices, including the use of solar panels, eco-friendly electric cars, the acquisition of green products and the planting of more trees. The authority also cooperated with the “Madrasa” platform, one of the initiatives of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Foundation, to produce short awareness films to introduce children to World Energy Day and spread the culture of sustainability according to purposeful educational methods.
The “World Energy Day” initiative is one of the pioneering initiatives launched by the UAE to be one of the first countries in the region to give great attention to protecting the environment and confronting climate change by adopting green policies and launching pioneering initiatives in this vital sector.
