News on the DS sky. Making its debut under the bonnet of the DS 3 and DS 4 is a new electric engine which at home they have named Hybrid and which, thanks to a self-rechargeable battery, allows the driver to travel more than 50% in the city without emissions. The system is designed to work autonomously: the battery charges automatically while driving thanks to the petrol engine, without the need for cables and without waiting times. The deceleration phases are automatically controlled to provide energy recovery; therefore, the use of mechanical brakes is also significantly reduced, with a consequent reduction in fine dust emissions.
Parsimony first of all…
Compared to the DS 3 PureTech 130 with automatic transmission, in the combined WLTP approval cycle, the Hybrdid version gains approximately 20% in terms of efficiency (1.2 liters of fuel less per 100 kilometres) 27 grams per kilometer of CO2 in less (equal to 19%), with emissions equal to 112 grams of CO2 per kilometer. As for DS 4, fuel savings can reach 16% in the combined WLTP homologation cycle (1.1 liters of fuel less to travel 100 kilometres) with a 15% reduction in CO2 emissions, i.e. a reduction of 21 grams up to a minimum of 116 grams per kilometer of CO2.
Characteristics
The Hybrid option consists of a 136 HP / 230 Nm petrol engine combined with a new six-speed dual clutch automatic transmission which integrates a 21 kW (28 HP) and 55 Nm electric motor. 0.9 kWh NMC lithium power supplies the self-rechargeable electrical system. The permanent magnet synchronous electric motor is integrated into the new six-speed dual-clutch e-DCS6 gearbox. With 21 kW (28 HP) and a maximum torque of 55 Nm, it can operate on electric power alone at low speeds and with moderate loads. During deceleration, it works as a generator to recover kinetic energy and power the 0.9 kWh battery located under the floor. The system also provides energy to start the petrol engine. Positioned under the bonnet and in the floor, the components of the HYBRID system do not affect the dimensions and capacity of the luggage compartment, which are the same as the petrol version.
Performance
The DS 3's 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time is 1.2 seconds faster at 8.4 seconds while the 1000 meter sprint time from a standing start is 29.7 seconds, with a reduction of 1.1 seconds, compared to the version with the PureTech 130 Automatic engine. The performance of the DS 4 is also better than the version with the PureTech 130 Automatic engine, with a 0-100 km acceleration time of 10.4 seconds (1.2 seconds faster) and a travel time of 1000 meters starting from stopped at 31.7 seconds (-1.3 seconds).
Useful information
Behind the steering wheel, while the transition from one engine to another is imperceptible, the speed indicator turns blue when traveling exclusively in electric mode. The energy flow, the battery charge level and its operating status are then displayed on the digital display of the instrument panel via a power meter. All this while the on-board computer shows the percentage of distance traveled exclusively in electric mode, which is also displayed at the end of the journey.
DS4 features and prices
DS 4 Hybrid will be available in the new Pallas and Étoile trim levels. The first features a diamond tungsten fabric interior and seats and headrests upholstered in black DS cloth decorated with a new pattern. The comfort of the passenger compartment is guaranteed by the acoustically insulating laminated glass of the front side windows and by the Clean Cabin system with “Air Quality System” integrated into the automatic dual-zone climate control. The technological equipment includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Stop & Go, Lane Departure Warning and front and rear parking sensors with assisted reversing camera. In the Étoile version, the interior is in black Alcantara with new stitching or a Criollo Brown Nappa leather upholstery that resembles a watch strap and heated seats. Prices are relatively 37,000 euros for the DS 4 Hybrid Pallas and 41,800 euros for the same car with Étoile trim.
