a problem that affects everyone as we age. It can weigh the genetic component. important to moisturize with consistent creams. Milks and gels are not needed
Elasticity, softness, consistency and pleasantness to the touch of the skin are qualities that partly depend on our genetic makeup. In addition to personal predisposition, however, there are several factors that lead to a drying of the skin and anything that alters the balance of the lipid cells of the epidermis worsens the situation. When dry skin, the primary defect lies in the lack of fatty substances and, only secondarily, of water – explains Piergiacomo Calzavara Pinton, director of the Dermatological Clinic of the Spedali Civili of Brescia -. In some people the condition is “naturally” optimal, in others (such as those with skin and respiratory allergies or psoriasis) much less.
What has a negative impact
However, the skin tends to dry out for everyone as we age or if we have been in the sun too many times and too long, because not only is it depleted of fat and water, but it also becomes thinner. Cold and wind also lower the defenses of the epidermis which progressively loses lipids and other nutrients, becoming dry and less elastic. In addition, detergents, aggressive soaps and washing too frequently have a negative impact: Many people who experience dryness wash often: convinced that they are hydrated, they make things worse – Calzavara Pinton emphasizes -. Our skin like that of a jacket or a pair of shoes: if it gets water it cracks. And, in addition to an unpleasant aesthetic appearance, dryness brings with it a number of problems: easy redness, sometimes peeling and an itch that can be very annoying and make you sleepy. There are not a few elderly people who complain of itching which, in almost all cases, is due to parched skin.
Possible solutions
So what’s the best way to keep her hydrated? The suggestion to apply products with a high lipid content such as ointments, ointments or even creams but “consistent” – concludes the expert -. The more fluid products such as milks and gels are of little use. A popular belief that drinking a lot helps moisturize the skin, but this is true only if the layer of fat that holds it in the epidermis is reconstituted.
