Dry eye is an increasing problem, also due to fine dust pollution. The particulate acts on the eye like talc, attacking the tear film – he explains Paolo Nucci, director of the University Eye Clinic of the San Giuseppe Hospital in Milan -. Banning access to the historic centers of our cities to the most polluting means, such as tourist buses, and washing the busiest streets frequently are two simple measures that could improve the quality of the air, also to the benefit of our eyes. 20% of patients who go to the ophthalmologist and about one in three elderly complain of symptoms attributable to dry eye syndrome, now recognized as a real pathology. Intense light-induced discomfort, the sensation of having a foreign body in the eye and of seeing through a fogged windshield are the main warning signs of this condition, characterized by the deterioration of the tear film that covers the ocular surface. To determine the phenomenon, today in worrying increase with the first cases found among children, also the quality of the environment in which we live. Recent studies attest to the correspondence between higher levels of PM10 and PM2.5 fine dust pollution (which act on the eye like talc, drying it) and recrudescence of ocular disorders.
