LA PALMA, Spain (Reuters) – A Spanish drone operator was granted permission on Tuesday to try to rescue three dogs trapped near the erupting volcano in La Palma, in the Canary Islands archipelago, and will try to save the animals using a net to collect dogs with the help of drones.
The three dogs have been trapped in an abandoned yard covered in volcanic ash for weeks. They have been fed by drones that drop food packages and so far no one has been able to find a way to rescue them. Helicopters are banned from flying into the area because of the flow of hot gases that can damage the engines.
Jaime Pereira, president of drone operator Aerocamaras, said he plans to send a 50-kilogram drone equipped with a wide net to try to capture the dogs, one by one, and take them 450 meters away from the lava flow.
“It’s the first time an animal has been rescued with a drone and the first time it has to be captured,” said Pereira. “If this is the last option dogs have, then let’s do it.”
The drone operator will have only four minutes to lure the dog into the net and another four minutes to leave the area. “We don’t want to run out of battery when we’re flying over lava,” said Pereira.
Drone tests are still underway and the mission’s ultimate success will depend on how the animals react to the drone’s arrival, Pereira said.
“They have been eating very little in recent weeks. They may come or be scared of the drone. It will really depend on their reaction.”
