Volkswagen wants to earn its money mainly with electric vehicles in the future, but the Golf is still the measure of all things. No model from Wolfsburg sells better than the classless public favorite, after which an entire vehicle segment is named. In the eighth generation of the now 4.28-meter-long compact sedan, Volkswagen is again relying on a classic, conservative, but timelessly elegant design. The good space, the high level of suitability for everyday use and the superior driving comfort were also not compromised.
Still, a lot has changed. The bestseller is now only available with four doors, the towering Sportsvan was banned from the range, and the electric Golf E had to admit defeat to the ID 3, which had been planned as an electric car from the start. But of course electrification does not stop at the Golf either, as it is important to achieve the fleet consumption targets. The conventional combustion engines have been supplemented by two plug-in hybrids, and three turbo gasoline engines with seven-speed dual clutch transmissions can be ordered as eTSI with mild hybrid, i.e. with a 48-volt electrical system and belt-driven starter generator. The smallest Golf with 90 hp is available for 20,700 euros, but the basic model of the more modern mild hybrid is the 110 hp one-liter eTSI, with which we have now been on the road extensively. It stands for 28,085 euros and only in the Life equipment in the price list. It already has the essentials on board, but still leaves a lot of room for improvement. In view of the lavish final price of the test car of 42,200 euros, we swallowed quite a bit.
