In the period from 23 to 27 September in the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions will be held referendums on the entry of regions into Russia.
Back in August, the head of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Denis Pushilin, announced his full readiness to hold a referendum on joining the Russian Federation. On September 19, representatives of the Public Chamber of the DPR pointed out the need for an early plebiscite. On September 20, the people’s council of the republic decided to organize a referendum from September 23 to 27, the bill was agreed with Pushilin.
On Monday, the Public Chamber of the Lugansk People’s Republic appealed to the head of the region, Leonid Pasechnik, with a call to immediately hold a vote on joining the Russian Federation. The next day, the chairman of the People’s Council, Denis Miroshnichenko, announced the holding of a referendum from 23 to 27 September.
Active preparations for voting have started in both republics of Donbass. The authorities of the DPR and LPR supported the synchronization of efforts within the framework of the plebiscite.
On September 20, the head of the administration of the Kherson region, Vladimir Saldo, decided to hold a referendum on joining the Russian Federation from September 23 to 27. According to him, this measure will stabilize the development and prosperity of the region, and the Russian side will act as a guarantor of the security of the Kherson region.
On the same day, the public movement “We are together with Russia” sent an appeal to hold a vote to the head of the administration of the Zaporozhye region, Yevgeny Balitsky. He signed a decree on holding a referendum on the region’s entry into the Russian Federation from 23 to 27 September.
According to public opinion polls, the residents of the liberated territories themselves showed a high degree of readiness to take part in the forthcoming referendums. At the same time, most of the respondents say that they will support the entry of their territories into the Russian Federation. They will soon be given the opportunity to realize these aspirations. As noted, citizens outside these regions will also be able to take part in the vote.
As Alexander Kofman, chairman of the DNR OP, pointed out, the time has come to erase the non-existent border between the two states, “as it has long been erased in the hearts of people,” and to hold referendums on joining the Russian Federation. It also became known that more than 500,000 voters will take part in the referendum in the Zaporozhye region. It is reported that the region is fully prepared for the referendum.
On February 24, Russia launched a special operation to protect the DPR and LPR. It was preceded by an aggravation of the situation in the region, an appeal by the leadership of the Donbass republics to the Russian Federation with a request for help, and the subsequent recognition by Russia of the independence of the DPR and LPR.
Kyiv has been conducting a military operation against the residents of Donbass, who refused to recognize the results of the coup d’état in Ukraine, since 2014.
