Dozens of Tesla owners have protested outside a delivery center in Shanghai. A few days earlier, Tesla buyers stormed showrooms after Tesla had significantly reduced the prices of new models.
According to news agency Reuters, the storms took place in cities such as Henan, Wuxi and Hangzhou, according to social media posts. Tesla has faced protests against previous price cuts in China before, but resistance has never been as widespread as the current protests.
The groups protesting across China were in touch and would continue to pressure Tesla to offer them some compensation, said Damon Yu, who bought a Model Y in September. The new price of his car is now more than 13.5 percent lower than the amount he paid for it.
Discounts due to falling Tesla sales
The Shanghai plant was also the target of spontaneous protest on Saturday, a day after Tesla cut prices on Model Y and Model 3 vehicles in China for the second time in three months. The latest discounts represent an effort to boost sales in the world’s largest electric car market after signs of a decline in sales.
Several owners in Shanghai said they felt misled by Tesla sales staff who had urged them to cancel orders for other electric cars. They were told they would see higher prices for Teslas in the new year.
Tesla: ‘No compensation’
According to Reuters, Tesla said it had no plans to offer compensation to buyers who recently bought a unit for more money. Tesla has also announced rebates in Singapore, South Korea, Japan and Australia.
In 2019, Tesla also significantly reduced Tesla prices in the Netherlands in order to compete with cars such as the Audi e-tron and Jaguar I-Pace. Within a month, prices fell by 10,000 euros for a Model S and even more than 50,000 euros for the Model S P100D with Ludicrous Performance.
