It concerns at least dozens of birds, Rijkswaterstaat reports. It is unclear what caused the birds to fall from the sky. “We have no picture of how it happened,” said the spokeswoman. However, photos from cameras on the road show that the birds are scattered across the lanes.
Emergency services are on their way to recover the starlings. Traffic to Amsterdam will be diverted from the Oudenrijn junction via the A12.
According to a spokesperson for the Bird Protection, it is a phenomenon that occurs very rarely. “Years ago, we saw hundreds of dead starlings in the Huijgenspark in The Hague. It was most likely because they had eaten poisoned berries.”
Birds also die from starvation or, for example, bird flu, but because the birds all fell at the same time, the Bird Protection Agency does not consider this explanation likely. Starlings fly in gigantic clouds. They may have been startled by a peregrine falcon and flew in all directions due to disorientation. In a panic, they could have hit the road surface as a result, but that has yet to be sorted out.”
