At least 23 people were killed in the US state of Mississippi and dozens of buildings were destroyed as a result of a powerful hurricane that swept through parts of the American south.
The US National Weather Service said a tornado caused damage 60 miles (96 km) northeast of Jackson, Mississippi.
Search and rescue teams from local and state agencies are assisting victims affected by the hurricane, while rural towns including “Rolling Fork” and “Silver City” reported damage.
The hurricane swept through the northeast of the country at a speed of 70 mph (113 km/h), without weakening, and headed towards Alabama.
