With the 13th place finish, Andrea Dovizioso equaled Austin’s result in the Made in Italy and Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. This might seem like a good premise, but you can’t always base everything on the results, also because the Yamaha Petronas rider’s was favored by the large number of crashes we witnessed in the second race held on the Misano track.
We should not be surprised, therefore, that at the end of the race the Forlì was very sorry and did not hide his disappointment with his performance, indicating a wrong choice of tires, but also the bad weather that characterized the days of Friday and Saturday, as factors that led him to live a Sunday below expectations.
“I didn’t understand much. I didn’t have a feeling from the start, I was struggling and so I wasn’t fast. But I think it was another important experience, because we made the same choice of tires as most of the other riders and we saw that it wasn’t the right one for me for two reasons: it dropped a lot in the last ten laps and then the soft didn’t give me the support I need in acceleration. So I didn’t have the right potential at the beginning and then there was even a drop, “said Dovizioso.
“Also, I’m still struggling with the bike, because I have to change my lines, so doing practically all the sessions in particular conditions and then going to the race in the dry was very difficult for me. This led me to use the tire and my energies the wrong way. It didn’t go any worse than the first race at Misano, but I didn’t take the step I expected after Austin. Fortunately, we are not playing for it this year and then these difficult weekends always allow us to accumulate an important experience “, he added.
The three-time vice-world champion then went into further detail of his problems, explaining that he struggled mainly in braking throughout the race.
“I’m still not in place under braking, so I can’t get the right speed when I enter the corners and make the line I want. I’m always a bit long and I can’t make the right lines to exploit the potential of the bike. But in general, when you’re not in place under braking, that also affects the rest of the corner, and that’s what happened to me in the race every lap. “
Despite the difficulties, for the moment Andrea is not worried about the future, also because the factory bike he will have next year will certainly be different from the M1 “Spec-B” he is using in this last section of 2021.
“It would be wrong to worry now, because there is still time to work and because next year I will have a different bike, even if I still don’t know how much it will be. It is logical that if the 2022 season starts tomorrow I would be worried, but not it is so, so it makes no sense to be so ahead of time “.
Finally, Dovizioso had his say on the world title just won by Fabio Quartararo, exalting his ability to fully exploit the potential of the M1 in any situation, also managing to obscure its weak points.
“I think Fabio deserves the title, but he also did something crazy this year. He manages to make the most of the strengths of the M1, but he is also very good at not highlighting his weaknesses. Having been so consistent. this season, in every race, it’s something really special, “he said.
“He manages to be so constant because he always manages to ride with the same riding style. On every track, in every condition, in every temperature, he always rides in the same way: he brakes very late, but it’s really difficult to turn the bike by pulling away. where he does it. And this is something that he can easily do. If you observe his run in free practice, he manages to do 5-6 laps in the same way, without making too many mistakes. This is what allows him to progress. session by session, to always start in the first two rows and to be constant in every situation “, he concluded.
