After the obvious difficulties he suffered at Misano, a race that marked his return to MotoGP, Andrea Dovizioso made small but significant progress in Austin. On a track that has aroused numerous criticisms due to an asphalt not suitable for the bikes of the premier category, and on a Yamaha with which to still become familiar, Andrea set the fourteenth time in 2’04’044.
The result for Dovi could have been even better if he hadn’t been stuck in traffic during his last attempt, but the sensations that emerged in this second official round seem good.
Andrea, at the end of the session, met the media and explained that he was not particularly disappointed for having had to abort a last lap that would have allowed him at least to finish ahead of Morbidelli.
“I’m not fast on the straights for this reason I tried to follow other riders. Unfortunately I ended up behind Aleix who was not fast at that moment due to problems with the bike in the final sector. When I follow the others, however, I understand something more about the bike ”.
The step forward made on a complex track like Austin’s amazed all observers, but not Dovizioso. Andrea admitted, however, that he still struggled to understand the Yamaha and adapt his riding style to that required by the M1.

“I am not surprised because it is normal to have made this progress compared to the situation at Misano. On the one hand, I am aware that I have a lot of margin because I am not riding as the bike requires, but there are gaps in the package that will make my life difficult in the race ”.
“Yamaha requires a certain amount of riding which is not instinctive for me. My way of approaching the curves is to brake hard and exit hard by immediately picking up the bike. The M1 does not require this style of driving and when you do you are slow. At the moment I still have to adapt ”.
Andrea then underlined how today’s race will be decidedly physically demanding. To try to patch up the gaps in the engine, Dovizioso will have to give his best in the driven sections, thus trying to stay with the group.
“When in acceleration you lose so much from the group it is more complicated. I will have to use a lot of energy at certain points on the track to stay with the group. I will have to recover in the changes of direction and in the braking on the straight. When you run a race like this, you come to an end exhausted ”.
“The important thing will be to have a race with the group and try to understand this bike more and more”.
Dovi then pointed out that in the Petronas team there are still doubts about which tire to use in the race, but he categorically ruled out soft as a valid choice.
“We tried something with the set up but I’m still not fully satisfied. However, my pace has improved and the pace looks good. We tried the hard tires and the feedback was positive, as well as with the medium ones, while the soft ones, although some did good times on Saturday, I don’t think they are the right tires for the race ”.
