GLASGOW (Reuters) – Disputes over funding are complicating efforts to reach an agreement in the United Nations (UN) climate talks as developing countries pressure rich nations to shoulder the costs of climate change.
Part of the problem is that there is no simple answer as to who is the biggest emitter of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming, a charge that developing countries level against the rich.
Although China and the United States lead the emission table, historically and in terms of current absolute figures, on a per capita basis, China falls in the ranking and Qatar, which produces all its energy from carbon dioxide-emitting oil and gas (CO2), soars to the top, according to figures from Our World in Data.
The United Kingdom, hosting the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland, can be considered the place where global warming emerged, as around 1750 it was the cradle of the Industrial Revolution fueled by coal — the most polluting form of fossil fuel.
The country was the biggest emitter of CO2 until 1911, when the US took the first position.
The US has remained a major emitter ever since, and although China has surpassed them in terms of absolute emissions per year, in total it has only emitted about half of the total CO2 generated by the US since the mid-18th century.
