The governor of São Paulo, João Doria, and former senator Arthur Virgílio defended this Sunday, 21, that the PSDB’s caucuses be postponed by a week. In a joint note, both said that they want “the 28th of November, next Sunday, so that the preliminary process can end quickly, efficiently and fairly.”
“It is urgent to resume the process of choosing the candidate, respecting the toucan members and their right to vote”, says the note. “To extend the caucuses process even more would be a disrespect to the toucan members and to the democratic process.”
The internal process, which defines the pre-candidate toucan for the Planalto Palace, would be completed this Sunday, but it was suspended and has an indefinite result forecast due to problems in the remote voting application. Votes in person at the Ulysses Guimarães Convention Center, in Brasília, in turn, were counted.
The governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, and Doria, polarize the internal dispute. Arthur Virgílio also competes, but with no chances of winning.
“We were warned throughout the process about the application’s fragility and the instability and insecurity problems that the proposed model could bring to the primaries”, affirm Doria and Virgílio. “Even in the face of warnings from both campaigns and from Kryptus, an audit contracted by the party itself to ensure the fairness of the election, the PSDB board chose to keep the contract with Faurgs (Support Foundation of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, headquartered in Pelotas) and the use of the platform”, they add.
In addition to the difficulties in voting, the technical problem motivates accusations of fraud between allies of the two main adversaries in the dispute. The Gaucho declared that the previews should take place “as soon as possible”.
Behind the scenes, supporters of the governor of São Paulo accuse Leite’s campaign of wanting to postpone the caucuses to win on the “tapetão”. Allies of Doria even said that supporters of Leite’s candidacy are trying to “smear” the process, with the postponement of the caucuses, because they glimpsed the imminent defeat. The same speech is used by allies of Milk.
In a statement, the Support Foundation of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (Faurgs) said it is investigating the causes of instability in the application. “The efforts of the institution’s technicians are to discover the cause of the system’s slowness. As soon as there is full proof, the details of what happened will be made public”, said the institution, which denied any relationship with the purchase of licenses to carry out facial recognition of affiliates, as was speculated earlier.
According to Faurgs, the security of the counting system was not affected. “The entire process is being monitored by technicians representing the three registered plates, ensuring smoothness and transparency”, the note concludes.
