Doping | A German doping doctor faces a ten-year prison sentence

This is an extensive doping torture for skiers and cyclists.

In Munich a trial began on Wednesday in which a German sports doctor and his four assistants are suspected of a blood doping program spread to several countries.

Operating in Erfurt Mark Schmidtin so far, 23 skiers and cyclists from eight countries have joined the group.

The group is suspected of having started anti-doping transfusions by the end of 2011 at the latest.

“It should not be forgotten that this is about economic gain. We are not talking about an athlete who has douped himself, but about a value-for-money doping business, ”said a sports lawyer. Michael Lehner commented on the case during the trial.

Doping program began to open after a police raid on Seefeld’s 2019 World Championships in skiing. Nine people were arrested in the police operation, five of whom were athletes.

Schmidt and his assistants face up to ten years in prison for violating German anti-doping laws if they are found guilty. Schmidt has been detained for 16 months since the Seefeld raid.

The prosecutor according to police, the investigations have found a wild amount of evidence against the accused. In addition, about 30 witnesses are heard in court.
