Hunting for the last step
In his single-seater career Jack Doohan the only thing still missing is the great high note. In recent years he has twice finished second in Asian F3 (2019 and 2020), second in the FIA F3 Championship (2021) and third in the F2 Championship (2023). Also for this reason perhaps the big leap into F1 has not yet arrived. However, the Australian has clear ideas about his future and in order to keep himself ‘free’ for the Circus this year he rejected offers from the WEC and IndyCar.
The choice of concentrate only on the role of third Alpine driver However, it seems to have paid off because the French team, in great crisis in recent months, is thinking of the Australian son of art to change course next year. Doohan is in fact the big favorite to replace Esteban Oconwho will leave the team at the end of the season.
A dream to realize
The person concerned does not go too far, but the FP1 held in Canada right in place of the #31 – although ‘ruined’ by the insistent bad weather, represents the confirmation of the Renault-owned team’s strong points on him. “My dream is to enter F1 and be on the starting grid – said Doohan to Sky Sports F1 – now I’m hanging out with the team as a reserve driver getting ready to get in the car. That’s where I want to go – added the third Alpine guide – and every time I have the chance to do it, whether it’s simulator or track or marketing events I try to have this opportunity. Nothing is certain, nothing is taken for granted, but I want to be there“.
Growing reserve
The habit of climbing into the cockpit from time to time is contributing to ‘roughing up’ Doohan, who compared to the free practice session held in Canada underlined that he experienced sensations in the car that were much more serene and ‘natural’ than other times: “Previously, when it came to free practice I was nervous, I had the feeling of making a leap from Formula 2, so there was a lot of emotion, whereas now I felt very complete. There was no fear, there was nothing that made me feel out of my comfort zone“. Alpine takes notes and the seat for 2025 now seems ready to welcome it.
