Smartphone use in traffic is and remains dangerous. That is why the government is launching the ‘Mij Nie Appen!’ campaign.
Another notification in. And another one. And another one. Those annoying sounds of the messages affect you and you go and check who sent all those messages. Of course, it’s not allowed when you’re driving, but we often take a look. Dangerous and that is why the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management is launching a new campaign to prevent people from receiving messages on the way.
MONO campaign: ‘Me Nie Appen!’
Motivation has carried out an investigation on behalf of the ministry. This shows that half of young people in the Netherlands do not take into account whether the recipient is on the road. A third sends a quick message, even though they know that someone is driving. This can be in the car or on the bike. This is even higher among young people aged 16-24: half do it. Yet we all know that it is dangerous. Nine out of ten Dutch people realize that distraction causes accidents. The chance of an accident is 2.5 times greater if you are fiddling with your smartphone.
An accident is a small corner, especially if people are distracted in traffic. This often happens through alerts from your mobile, both in the car and on the bike
Minister Mark Harbers
That is why they want to stimulate with this MONO campaign that people do not read messages, but also do not make them. The MONO campaign has been in existence since 2018, the aim of which is not to be distracted by social media. Mono means alone and along the way you have to deal with one thing. Right, the traffic. The new campaign focuses on road users themselves and comes with the slogan ‘Mij Nie Appen!’
Errand
Just don’t do it. That’s actually the message. Check your socials if you’re not participating in traffic. There is still a world to be won here, because previous research shows that two-thirds of Dutch people simply read their messages while driving.
So be aware of this. Not only because it is dangerous, but also because there will be (more) checks. During the MONO day of action, police forces will be massively present on our roads. The fines are not tender: 140 euros for the bicycle and 350 euros for the car.
