The ‘leopards’ were more effective and beat the blues 4-2 in that final instance.
In the press conference after the match, technical director Alberto Gamero explained that in penalties “God is the one who rules”. Others describe the definition from the penalty spot as a lottery. Gamero gave him a religious explanation.
Criticism rains down
Gamero’s “divine” explanation has generated disgust among some of the fans and the press, who consider that penalties depend solely and exclusively on the players and the technical director. That is why videos of the rival goalkeeper are prepared and analyzed.
“There were two times. One clearer for them and another much clearer for us. We tied and were able to increase the score. In the second half we had transitions, elaboration and we finished better. In the penalty shootout, God commands it for them. Congratulations to Bucaramanga. The boys competed how we wanted to compete and we couldn’t qualify,” was what Gamero said.
One of the critics of Gamero’s explanation is the journalist from the ESPN network, Nicolás Samper, who pointed out against the coach for involving God in the elimination of Millonarios.
“God – whoever you believe in – does not handle shoot-outs from the penalty spot. God is worried about other things (…) God never commands, he has never commanded her in penalties,” Samper highlighted.
Samper did not stop with those words. He added: “That’s about studying them, about working on them. You have to kick every week. That’s not because God was bored and said: ‘What am I doing today to make people bitter? That Millonarios will be eliminated due to penalties.’ No, Gamero, the message is very wrong.”
Samper finished his comments vehemently: “Respect God, Gamero. Blasphemous!”.
