Mother of two children dies of breast cancer diagnosed late: gynecologist on trial for murder
A gynecologist is charged with manslaughter in a trial that began today in Turin for the death of one of her patients due to breast cancer. According to the prosecutor, the gynecologist did not promptly prescribe the necessary examinations, despite the repeated requests of the 38-year-old. The doctor also reassured the patient about the possibility of undertaking a second pregnancy, which according to the indictment, would have led to speeding up the development of the neoplasm, until her death in 2018, two years after having had the second child.
The woman went to the doctor in 2014, after starting to feel breast pain while breastfeeding her first child. After having prescribed some ultrasound scans, from which a fibroadenosis would have emerged, the doctor would have continued to reassure the patient and, according to the prosecutor, would not have prescribed the necessary diagnostic investigations, such as a mammogram, an MRI, a needle aspiration or a further visit. specialist.
The diagnosis of cancer would have arrived in July 2016, when the woman, pregnant with her second child, had a “bone failure” and was hospitalized. Here a fourth stage tumor was found, “in the metastatic phase with multiple lymphonoid and bone localizations”, while the child was delivered urgently. According to the prosecutor, the late diagnosis would have “prevented the timely start of adequate health treatments with respect to the disease”, leading to the death of the woman on 7 December 2018.
