Washington.- “Donald hates his birthdays,” Ivana Trump once commented, referring to her ex-husband.
And apparently, he seems to hate this one in particular, as he looked genuinely upset on Sunday when his supporters sang “Happy Birthday” to him at a Las Vegas rally.
“You know there is a certain time when you don’t want to hear “Happy Birthday” and we want to pretend that day doesn’t exist.”
No doubt, now at 78, he is trying to convince the country to give him another four years in power, at the end of which he would be the oldest president in American history — a place he currently occupies the tenant of the Oval Office who is 81 years old.
During their campaign, both men have downplayed their age and try to make the other appear weak and grumpy as much as possible.
Trump’s team spent the week lashing out at selectively edited videos of Biden staggering around Europe, making him look like Soprano Corrado lost in Newark.
“Biden was seen staring into space and wandering around like a brain-dead zombie,” said Karoline Leavitt, press secretary for the Trump campaign.
The Biden campaign responded with an email on Trump’s birthday, reminding voters that he slept through his own trial, a case that resulted in felony convictions.
“He is unstable and can’t focus on anything, he is fading before our eyes,” said James Singer, a spokesman for the Biden campaign, about the former president.
Trump used to have fun on his birthdays. “Donald was the boy who always threw the cake,” his younger brother Robert told journalist Marie Brenner.
After he became a mogul, Trump hosted parties at his casinos in Atlantic City, such as the one at Trump Castle in 1988, when he turned 42, and played videos in which Liza Minnelli and Billy Crystal wished him happy birthday. President Ronald Reagan even sent him a telegram.
