Last Sunday morning was not going to be different.
The UFC 309 event was one of the most anticipated of the year. For a simple reason: the best fighter of all time, Jon Jones, returned a year and a half later to the most famous octagon in the world. And he did it against another legend, Stipe Miocic, considered the best heavyweight in the history of the UFC. The fight had all the ingredients to be one of the most remembered.
On a sporting level, there was not much history. The reality is that Miocic was already in the throes of his professional career and Jon Jones destroyed his compatriot in three rounds, leaving a final highlight with a spinning kick that is now part of the history of the sport.
But there was more. Shortly before the main fight, the president-elect of the United States appeared, donald trumpaccompanied by the CEO of the UFC, Dana White, and his inseparable Elon Musk. It was not the first time that the American magnate was present at a UFC event, far from it, but it was since he was elected the new president of the country.
The politician’s presence in the stellar fight did not go unnoticed and, in fact, was very appreciated by the biggest star in sports. After his victory against Miocic, Jon Jones celebrated his performance by imitating the dance that Donald Trump usually does in his political appearances, as a gesture of affection for having attended the fight. But the thing didn’t stop there.
After leaving the octagon, Jon Jones walked around the cage to where the president-elect was to greet him and hand him the UFC belt as a sign of respect. A ‘gift’ that the biggest mixed martial arts star wanted to give Trump for his support of the sport. Of course, after feeling the title, the tycoon returned his belt so he could go celebrate with his people. Without a doubt, Trump’s victory in the US elections will be a positive thing for the UFC industry.
