During the third day of pre-season testing in Barcelona, Formula 1 issued an official statement relating to the conduct of the Russian Grand Prix, scheduled for 25 September 2022 as the 17th round of the world championship. Given the circumstances currently underway, with the nation concerned protagonist of the military invasion in Ukraine, the leaders of the Circus have considered “impossible” race on the Sochi track, with the event currently excluded from this year’s calendar.
In this way, the rounds temporarily confirmed for the upcoming championship thus drop to 22 races, contrary to the 23 scheduled until a few days ago. However, according to the President and CEO of Formula 1, Stefano Domenicalithere would be no particular difficulties a replace the Russian GP. An approach that would materialize also thanks to the recent experience gained during the period of the pandemic, during which it was necessary to replace various appointments quickly: “Speaking specifically about the situation this year – Domenicali said in a statement reported by racefans.net – due to the Russian situation, I can only confirm to you that we have already shown in the last two years that we are very flexible, and to have no problem finding possible solutions. Thanks also to the great success that F1 is experiencing, the possibility of having new races in the future is still very great – he added – and, as regards the possible locations for the future, I will limit myself to saying that there are a few ongoing negotiations. We have to make many choices to identify the strategic markets that we believe are right for Formula 1. We could also expand the calendar because, technically speaking, we can go up to 25 races. It’s written in our rulebook, it’s in the Concorde Pact, and the teams will follow our vision on that. We must not forget that this year there will be 23 races – he concluded – the highest number of races in the history of Formula 1. Therefore, we will evaluate everything without any hurry, in order to analyze all the situations that arise in front of us ”.
