In the early afternoon of today we told you that Ducati will take over from Energica as the sole supplier of the MotoE starting from 2023. An agreement until 2026 which was confirmed a little later in Misano, in the presence of the CEO of the Red. Claudio Domenicali, and that of Dorna Sports, Carmelo Ezpeleta.
The man at the top of the Borgo Panigale manufacturer has traced the route of what will be the new chapter of the electric World Cup, explaining that the belief will be the same that characterized Ducati’s work in MotoGP, namely innovation.
“We will continue to do what we have always done, but in a new way. There is nothing better than racing to gain experience and tests. As in MotoGP, where our engine is one of the best, so we want it to be in MotoE. In this category the main problem is weight, so we want to make a bike as light as possible, “said Domenicali.
The work on the new electric motorcycle will be done within the racing department, but also making use of the production and know-how of the four-wheeled brands of the Volkswagen group, of which Ducati has now been part of for several years.
“Our racing department is already quite expensive, so we will increase it by a few units. We have chosen to race to develop a new technology, so we will make a real racing bike, but also involving the production department. The help of our group will also be important: Porsche, for example, is developing its own battery technology, so we have a lot of experience to draw from and we will do it. “

We will still have to wait for the first tests on the track, also because the project is still in a phase that we could almost define as embryonic.
“We have recently reached an agreement with Dorna, so we have just started work on the project and it will take a while to see the bike on the track. In 2022 we will start development on the circuit, in order to reach safety and performance required, also trying to exploit the knowledge we have acquired in MotoGP “.
This choice will then mark an epochal turning point also for the road Ducati, because it will pave the way for the first electric model in the range, even if it will take its time.
“We are defining the racing bike, but our plan is to make a road version of it as well, even if we don’t have a date yet. I don’t think it will happen before 2025, but it will be by 2030, when the technology is ready. The improvement of batteries is not a fast process, but many are working on it. At the moment it remains difficult to say when electric motors will replace combustion ones. “
