Biberach. Health apps, telemedicine, networked practices: “Everything is becoming more and more digital. With us too, ”says Michael Schmelmer, member of the management team at the pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim, which also has a location in Biberach. The goal: to improve human and animal health.
Digitization in medicine
“We use artificial intelligence, robotics, big data and many other digital technologies in order to enable faster drug development today as well as improved prevention and early detection of diseases in the future,” said Schmelmer. New drugs often take ten years from research to application. Databases would help to find the right studies for patients more quickly: “We evaluate the results in real time. In future, new drugs will reach the patients who urgently need them earlier. “
Digital language analysis
A current project are programs that use language analysis to identify the risk of a mental illness such as schizophrenia at an early stage. Once the diagnosis has been made, the best case scenario is to treat the disease early and slow down or even stop the course of the disease. Such programs also work with animals: “Soundtalks”, an audio monitoring system, is currently being tested by Boehringer Ingelheim in animal husbandry.
