Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, the six-time Wimbledon Open champion, will be the focus of attention on the first day of the tournament, along with Britain’s Emma Radokano and her compatriot Andy Murray.
The All England Club announced the schedule of matches for the first day, which will take place on Monday, as the 2022 edition of the tournament begins.
As the tournament tradition goes, defending champion Djokovic, who beat Italy’s Matteo Bertini in the men’s singles final last year, will play the first match on the main court, when he faces South Korea’s Kwon Sun-woo.
Djokovic will seek to snatch the fourth title in a row at Wimbledon, after he succeeded in winning the 2018, 2019 and 2021 editions, while the 2020 edition was canceled. Also, Radokano, the US Open champion, was chosen to participate in the first day on the main court.
Radocano will face Belgian rival Alison van Jutfang, in an attempt to start her career in the tournament well in front of her fans, after she performed wonderfully in her first appearance on the scene in the tournament last year and reached the fourth round.
Andy Murray, another British player, will play in the third and final game of the opening day, when he faces Australian James Duckworth.
Murray is seeking to achieve a better result than his qualification for the third round last year, after he performed well and reached the final of the Stuttgart Championship this month, losing to Britney, after achieving important victories at the expense of Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas and Australian Nick Kyrgios.
Tunisian Anas Jaber, German Angelique Kerber and Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz are among the big names that will participate in Monday’s matches.
It was confirmed that in the absence of Australian Ashleigh Barty, the Polish women’s top seed Iga Shifontek will compete on Center Court on Tuesday, when she faces Croatia’s Jana Vet.
Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who won his first two Grand Slam tournaments this year, is expected to participate in the second day of the tournament, as is the case for Serena Williams, who is returning from injury.
