Djokovic king of tennis and… wine: Nole and its production of syrah and chardonnay
Six hectares planted with chardonnay and syrah in Serbia (in the central region of Šumadija): are the grounds where Novak Djokovic is building his project related to the world of wine. The world tennis phenomenon has a production that is around 30 thousand bottles per year which are exported halfway around the world. This was reported by Gambero Rosso who spoke with thewinemaker from Nole, Mladen Dragojlovic.
«I looked for a compromise between what Nole loves to drink, the place of production and the market. Nole likes Italian wines, especially Piedmont and Tuscany, but also Rhône and Burgundy. But the Italian varieties didn’t take root well, so we started with the French ones”, he explains to Gambero Rosso.
Goran Djokovic, Nole’s cousin, follows the entire business and promptly follows up on the state of the activities. «He is 100% focused on tennis and only drinks a few drinks when he is not on tour. His diet is very strict.”
«The idea is not to make blockbuster wines, but wines with a sense of place, which are recognizable at the first sip. I would like to point out that we do not purchase a single bunch, only proprietary grapes. And we use very delicate toasting on wood”, underlines Djokovic’s winemaker, Mladen Dragojlovic at Gambero Rosso.
