Chopped and screwed: In Houston, these words are forever linked to hip-hop legend DJ Screw. They describe his mixtapes with clipped and slowed down hip-hop songs in which a lively trade emerged in the Texan city in the 1990s. His unique, languid sound became all the rage outside of Houston and can be heard today on artists like Drake and Beyoncé. DJ Screw is no longer alive: he died at the age of 29 from an overdose of the drug mix associated with his music style’purple drink‘. Little is known about his life, but framed by a beautiful sound design brings the third season of hip-hop podcast mogul bring his story to life.
