Hernán Darío Velásquez, known as “El Paisa”, leader of a group of dissident FARC guerrillas, died in an ambush in Venezuela, Colombian daily El Tiempo reported, citing intelligence sources.
The newspaper guarantees that Colombian authorities will not confirm the death of the guerrilla, leader of the dissent from Segunda Marquetalia, until his body is located.
El Tiempo adds that El Paisa’s possible death was recorded in the Venezuelan state of Apure, very close to the border with Arauca and Vichada, where the splinter group led by Iván Márquez appears to be hiding.
At the moment, there is no information on more deaths or injuries in the incident, although everything indicates that he was attacked with rifle fire and explosives, the newspaper reports.
Iván Márquez, who was the guerrilla’s main peace negotiator, as well as Hernán Darío Velásquez, along with other former FARC chiefs, abandoned the peace agreement signed with the Colombian authorities and on August 29, 2019 announced their return to arms , alleging a “betrayal of the State” to this consensus reached in Havana.
