Disney has announced another price increase for its streaming services Disney+, Hulu and ESPN Plus. Starting October 17, monthly and annual subscriptions will see an increase, with the Disney+ Monthly Plan with advertising going from $8 to $10 a month.
Other subscription plans will also see increases: Disney+’s ad-free monthly plan will go from $14 to $16, while its annual plan will go from $140 to $160. Hulu and ESPN Plus will also increase their prices, with ad-supported plans increasing by $1 per month and ad-free plans by $2 per month.
To offset the price increase, Disney+ will offer new content and playlists curated starting September 4. ABC News Live will thus be part of the subscription, while the first playlist will be dedicated to preschoolers, followed by four other categories: Seasonal, Epic Stories (Marvel and Star Wars), Throwbacks (old shows and movies) and Real Life (documentaries).
The price increase and the introduction of new playlists are part of Disney’s strategy to make its streaming services profitable and are in addition to blocking account sharing and ad blockers. However, the move is unlikely to be welcomed by users, who will find themselves paying more to access content.
The increase in prices for Disney+ is news that will cause discussion. On the one hand, the company offers new content and features to justify the increase, on the other, users could feel penalized by this decision, since the news does not seem so substantial. For now, we are only talking about the United States, so Italy seems safe; but for how long will this be the case, considering that the price increase has been inexorable year after year?
