Gifu – Japan is known for its high standards of cleanliness. The viral videos of unhygienic pranks in restaurants with a sushi conveyor belt are all the more surprising. The “Sushi Terror” videos in the online networks have been clicked and shared millions of times over the past few days. The consequences are massive outrage, stock market losses and also legal consequences. This, although some videos were recorded months and years ago, reports the German Press Agency.
“Sushi terror” in Japan: Disgusting video on Twitter stirs up the stock market
In one video, a youth licks the top of a soy sauce bottle and the rim of a teacup before putting them back on the shelf. Then he licks his fingers and touches a piece of sushi on the conveyor belt, which he leaves on it. The video was shot at a Shushiro store in the central Japanese city of Gifu and received 40 million views.
“That is disgusting. I can no longer go to restaurants with a sushi conveyor belt”
After the publication, the restaurant chain lost almost five percent in value. Other videos show customers at other sushi restaurants licking someone else’s spoon and smearing wasabi on passing sushi pieces. It should only be a few videos – with a big impact in Japan. One Twitter user wrote: “This is disgusting. I can no longer go to restaurants with a sushi conveyor belt.”
Internet prank: Restaurant chain files a complaint
The teenager from the video apologized to his parents, reports the sushi chain Sushiro. Nevertheless, they will take legal action. The soy sauce bottles were exchanged in the affected branches and the cups were cleaned. In some restaurants you will have to pick up the dishes and spices in the future. Disinfected dishes are offered nationwide on request. Other restaurant chains with treadmills are also taking legal action. According to the Jiji news agency, Kura Sushi announced that it would monitor its sushi conveyor belts with cameras.
After outrage: Sympathy with restaurant operators
After the outrage on social networks, many users are now showing their sympathy for the operators of the sushi restaurants. Japanese singer and actor Yuya Tegoshi shared under the hashtag #saveSuhiro that he will “definitely” eat at Sushiro. The situation is simply terrible for the chain.
He had been thinking about eating there for a long time, but the long queues had always put him off before. That’s why photographer Tesuya Haneda was looking forward to a spontaneous visit to a Sushiro branch. He told the AFP news agency in Tokyo: “I think it only happened once – and that doesn’t mean it’s happening all the time.” (dpa/hk)
