Can consume yogurt for many time protect us against colon cancer? According to a study led by researchers from the Mass Hospital General Brigham (USA), Yes.

They are assumed that the consumption of yogurt, which contains live strains of bacteria, protects in front of many types of diseases, such as colorectal cancer. The new work, which is published in the magazine ‘GUT Microbes‘explains how yogurt consumption over time can protect against Colorectal cancer: The key lies in the changes that yogurt generates in our intestinal bacteria, the so -called intestinal microbiome.

Using studies data that have followed the participants for decades, the researchers discovered that the long -term consumption of two or more portions per week of yogurt was related to lower rates of positive colorectal cancer positive for Bifidobacteriuma bacterial species found in yogurt.

The study showed that the bacterial species was quite common: about 30% of colorectal cancer patients had bifidobacterium detectable in their tumor tissue.

“Our work provides unique evidence on the potential benefit of yogurt,” he says Shuji Oginoauthor of the study. «The approach of my laboratory is to try to link the long -term diets and other exhibitions to a possible key difference in the tissue, such as the presence or absence of a particular species of bacteria. This type of detective work can increase the solidity of the tests that link the diet with health results ».

The study analyzed data from two prospective cohorts in the US Nursing Health Study (NHS) and the HEALTH PROFESSIONAL STUDY STUDY (HPFS). More than 150,000 professionals were followed since 1976 and 1986, respectively, through questionnaires about lifestyle and dairy consumption, including yogurt. In addition, the researchers analyzed tissue samples of colorectal cancer patients to measure the presence of Bifidobacterium DNA.

The results showed 3,079 documented cases of colorectal cancer in the two populations analyzed.

For a long time it is believed that yogurt and other fermented dairy products are beneficial for gastrointestinal health

The study analyzed 1,121 cases of colorectal cancer, of which 31% were positive for bifidobacterium. Although a general association between yogurt consumption and colorectal cancer was not found, a 20% reduction in the incidence of positive tumors to bifidobacterium was observed in those who consumed at least two weekly portions. This decrease concentrated on proximal colon cancer, located on the right side of the colon.

It is known that proximal colon cancer patients have worse survival results that patients with distal cancers.

“It has long been believed that yogurt and other fermented dairy products are beneficial for gastrointestinal health,” says co -author Tomotaka Ugai. «Our findings suggest that this protective effect can be specific for positive tumors for bifidobacterium ».

This article adds to the evidence that illustrates the connection between the diet, the intestinal microbiome and the risk of colorectal cancer

Researchers pose the hypothesis that long -term yogurt consumption can reduce the risk of proximal colon cancer by changing the intestinal microbiome, including bifidobacterium, but indicate that more research is needed that meet both basic science and studies of population health to reach a definitive conclusion.

“This article adds to the evidence that illustrates the connection between the diet, the intestinal microbiome and the risk of colorectal cancer,” concludes Andrew T. Chan. “It gives us an additional route to investigate the specific role of these factors in the risk of colorectal cancer among young people.”
