Dinosaurs The largest Triceratops dinosaur fossil “Big John” ever discovered was sold at auction for 6.65 million euros

Big John’s bones are about 60 percent in size. The skull has survived for millions of years almost intact.

In Paris the fossil of the Triceratops dinosaur, which was described as in good condition, was auctioned off on Thursday afternoon, according to Reuters. The sale price was EUR 6.65 million, of which the actual club price before side costs was EUR 5.5 million.

Before the auction, the auction house Drouot estimates that the price of fossil will rise to 1.2–1.5 million euros.

Dinosaurs are rarely auctioned. Prices could rise very high, as in 2020, when the fossil Tyrannosaurus rex was sold For € 27 million at Christie’s auction in New York.

From the United States The dinosaur found in South Dakota in 2014 has been named “Big John” according to its landowner.

“We have compared the dimensions of Big John’s skull to 41 other Triceratops and found it to be the largest found in the history of paleontology,” the paleontologist Iacopo Briano told Reuters.

The vegetarian dinosaur is over 66 million years old. At the same time, during the Cretaceous, the earth was inhabited by, among others, the tyrannosaurus rex monsters.

The first Triceratops fossil was discovered in the late 1880s in the United States. The discovery was initially thought to be a giant, extinct bison. Only later was the fossil understood to be a three-horned dinosaur.

Big John about 60 percent of the bones are in size. The skull has survived for millions of years almost intact. A skull about two feet wide and 2.6 feet long makes up nearly a third of a dinosaur about nine feet long.

The Triceratops walked on four legs has been compared to the current rhinos to which thoughts take the horns of Triceratops ’massive head.

Triceratops is also characterized by a bony collar that protected its neck. Big John’s collar is damaged. Paleontologists estimate the injury to be a battle trace of encountering a smaller classmate.
