With these times, knowing the euro class of your diesel car is fundamentalto avoid incurring hefty fines or, worse, seeing your euro 4 diesel car (but also 5 or 6 in some cities) being taken away by a euro 2 diesel tow truck called by a patrol on a euro diesel car 3. Over time, various euro classes for vehicles have followed, all aimed at reduce emissions of pollutants from enginesmainly nitrogen oxides (commonly referred to as NOx), unburnt hydrocarbons, sulfur dioxide and the dreaded fine dust. All substances to which we tried to put a stop to using devices such as the catalytic converter and the FAP, the particulate filter. The first is used to transform unburnt hydrocarbons, NOsx and the dreaded carbon monoxide, in water, nitrogen and CO2. The FAP, on the other hand, installed on all diesel engines starting from the last euro 4, has the objective of filtering fine dust by limiting its dispersion into the environment.
Therefore, to know the environmental class of your vehicle it is advisable to refer to vehicle registration document of this, in particular to the line identified by the initials V.9 (usually on the first side of the registration certificate) of box 2. Furthermore, for some years now, the homologation of the car has been repeated more clearly in box 3, explicitly indicating the its euro class. S.and there is no indication on the EEC / 411 directive, the car is to be considered Euro 0.
The euro car 1 are all those compliant with directive 91/411 EEC which entered into force on 1 January 1993 with the obligation of catalytic converter. All cars registered after this date are to be considered euro 1 and one of the following abbreviations will appear in the booklet:
91/441 / EEC – 91/542 / EEC point 6.2.1.A – 93/59 / EEC
The car euro 2 on the other hand, they are all those compliant with directive 94/12 EEC, which came into force in 1996. In this case, one of these abbreviations will appear on the booklet:
91/542 / EEC point 6.2.1.B – 94/12 / EC – 96/1 / EC – 96/44 / EC – 96/69 / EC – 98/77 / EC
Follow the car euro 3, all those registered between January 1, 2001 and January 1, 2006 and compliant with directive 98/69 CE in force since 2000. However, it is necessary to pay attention to the fact that some cars may have been registered in 2001, but manufactured in 2000, therefore not compliant with the Euro 3 directive. of the following abbreviations we will deal with a euro 3 vehicle.
98/69 / CE – 98/77 / CE ref 98/69 / CE A – 1999/96 / CE A – 1999/102 / CE ref. 98/69 / CE – 2001/1 / CE ref 98/69 / CE – 2001/27 / CE A – 2001/100 / CE A – 2002/80 / CE A – 2003/76 / CE A
The car euro 4 are all those produced from 1st January 2006 until 1st January 2011. In this case the car falls within the Euro 4 environment class only if the reference directive, that is 98/69 CE-B shows the letter B, while any other abbreviation indicates the reference to a previous legislation. However, a Euro 4 diesel vehicle may not have been manufactured with a Particulate Filter (FAP) and therefore it is necessary to have it checked whether or not your car has a Particulate Filter. In fact, it may happen that, in the event of a traffic block, even though the vehicle is a Euro 4, it may not be authorized to circulate as it lacks a FAP. They belong to this category:
98/69 / EC B – 98/77 / EC ref. 98/69 / EC B – 1999/96 / EC B – 1999/102 / EC ref. 98/69 / EC B – 2001/1 / EC ref. 98/69 CE B – 2001/27 / CE B – 2001/100 / CE B – 2002/80 / CE B – 2003/76 / CE B – 2005/55 / CE B1 – 2006/51 / CE ref. 2005/55 / EC B1
The car euro 5 on the other hand, those cars registered starting from January 2011 or homologated starting from 1 September 2009. This category includes those cars that bear one of the following abbreviations in the booklet:
1999/96 / EC Line B2 – 1999/96 / EC Line C – 2001/27 / EC REF 1999/96 / EC Line B2 – 2001/27 / EC REF 1999/96 / EC Line C – 2005/78 / EC REF 2005/55 / EC Row B2 – 2005/78 / EC REF 2005/55 / EC Row C- 2006/51 / EC REF 2005/55 / EC Row B2 – 2006/51 / EC REF 2005/55 / EC Row C – 2006/81 / EC REF 2005/55 / EC Line B2 (Euro 5) – 2006/81 / EC REF 2005/55 / EC Line C – 2008/74 / EC REF 2005/55 / EC Line B2 – 715/2007 and 692/2008 (Euro 5A and Euro 5B) – 715/2007 and 692/2008
Cars complete the picture euro 6, all those cars registered starting from September 2015. However, there are different types of the euro 6 category: le euro 6 A are all those cars registered since January 2016 followed by the euro 6B and the euro 6Cmandatory for homologations starting from September 2018. This latest homologation provides that the emission level is measured by road test following the new WLTP cycle, while with homologation Euro 6D the pollutants are measured on the basis of the WLTC homologation cycles, which combines the WLTP procedure with the RDE test. Thanks to this double test, values closer to the real ones are obtained once on the road. The Euro 7 protocol should arrive shortly, with even more stringent rules.
As an alternative to checking the passbook, you can use Internet: for example on the ACI websitewhere residents in regions affiliated with the club will be able to enter the license plate of their car and trace its environmental class.
