Authorities are investigating whether the man drowned or died as a direct consequence of the attack by the fish
A 30-year-old man fishing with a group of friends in southeastern Brazil jumped into a lake to flee from a swarm of bees that threatened the group, but was fatally attacked by piranhas, local media reported on Tuesday.
The victim, whose identity was not disclosed, was on Sunday with two friends in a lake in the municipality of Brasilandia de Minas, in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais, and when they felt the presence of the insects, the three jumped into the water, according to the initial report from the local Fire Department.
According to the rescue agency’s account, the two friends managed to swim to the other shore and out of the lake, but the other fisherman was attacked earlier by carnivorous fish that “disfigured his face and part of his body.”
The authorities are investigating whether the man drowned, unable to flee from the piranhas that could prevent him from swimming to the other end of the lake, or if he died as a direct consequence of the attack by the ferocious fish.
