“Attack, attack, come on!” says a laughing Diego Bertie when starting the conversation. Seconds later, the 54-year-old actor is happy because his show “Días de furia” will have a second season, which began this Tuesday, July 5. The presentations were scheduled for the 12th, 19th and 26th at the Barranco Station.
In this interview, Diego Bertie talks about the new season of “Days of Fury”of the album that will be released this 2022 and even of Magaly Medina, who gave her opinion on a report they did on her program and questioned the actor and singer with phrases like “it’s not the one from before” or “Fito (Páez), wherever you are,! forgive him, because he doesn’t know what he sings!
―You started your show with four dates, now it will be two months. Did you expect it?
―The truth is I was very excited to get back in touch with the public and I think that has happened magically. People really enjoy the show from start to finish; they sing, they dance The show lasts two hours, but they ask for more. So, it’s a mix between my desire to return and people’s desire to sing and rediscover their music. There is everything, that is, I interpret songs of mine, of Images, of Soda Stereo, of Los Prisioneros, of Alaska, of Los Abuelos de la Nada, of Charly García. It is a journey for an entire generation. There are also young people, because people are still listening to all that music.

―People who went to the first season, can they go to the second and find something new?
“Yes, for starters there are always surprise guests. Very soon I am going to have Patricio Suárez-Vértiz and we are going to sing a song by Pedro (Suárez-Vértiz). Also one of mine and one of his. For the month of July we are going to pay tribute to Peruvian music with our version of the emblematic song “With you Peru”. I surprise myself every week, because I have nothing planned. We didn’t even have these July performances booked. There are songs that we keep changing, but basically the structure of the show is the same.
―Do you think that TV has helped people not to forget your songs, since you have been absent from music for several years?
“Actually, it was the radio. The radio has always played “Images” and “How difficult it is to love”. The people who listen to Radio Oxygen, Radio Oasis and Rock of Memory have always been familiar with my music. In all this time that I have not been present, my music has continued to be valid. And that has also been one of the reasons why it has encouraged me to return.

came back to stay
―Is this return to music a circumstance or is there Diego for a while?
-I hope so. I already made friends with music, I was a bit far away. That doesn’t mean I’m going to stop acting. I’m about to make a movie and that’s where I go back to television, I don’t know. I don’t have it planned. I have proposals for theater too. But right now I’m focused on carrying out this project that requires a lot of concentration. Presentations are demanding and exhausting, especially for me who has been out of training. This does not mean that the show is bad, on the contrary. Before maybe I could do five performances in a row. Now I do one and I need a couple of days to recover (laughs). But all good.
―What is the new thing that you are going to show your audience?
I’m recording new music. I’m re-recording songs with “Images”. We just recorded “The Good Times”, which will soon be out on Spotify. We have recorded an unreleased song called “Don’t burn the city” which is also on the platform. I’m going to release a song with Augusto Madoño, we’ve made a nice video in Bolívar. So it’s not just the old songs, but a whole album is coming (Río XXX) with nine songs, even though the disk form no longer works. It’s an album I recorded in Rio de Janeiro in 2003, but it never came out. I’m rerecording. This album has it all. It has rock, like the one that people are used to listening to me; It’s got soul, it’s got R&B and a bit of electronica. It is an album that is made to be heard in its entirety.

―Why did you change it?
―What I would like to do with music has been changing. I have re-recorded the album with another production. They are the same songs, but with 2022 versions, produced by Manuel Carrión Leca and Augusto Madueño. The previous album was produced by a Brazilian producer and gave it a pop wave like Luis Miguel. And, actually, my vibe is more rock and pop.
―Is your album aimed at the new generations?
“I wish that would be nice. (On the album) there is a unity, there is a concept of production. It is like a journey through various stages and sensations of my experience since I lived in Rio (Brazil).
beautiful love
―25 years after the premiere of “How difficult it is to love”, why do you think the song is still valid?
―Different generations have listened to it, the radio has definitely helped a lot. “How difficult it is to love” is a song that everyone knows and I also think that the pandemic gave the song greater relevance and depth. Many people used it with a hymn to cheer themselves up. I mean, everyone wanted the sun to rise again and continue living and get the best out of yourself. And how difficult life makes us to be able to love in peace, because we have so many problems on us, be they political, emotional, family and work.
―What is the most difficult for you?
―The difficult thing is to believe that the world is going to improve and on that build a love for you; it’s hard. Not because the feeling of love is difficult, but because life makes it difficult for us at times.
―At 54 years old, can you already say that you learned to love in the right way?
―Truly loving is loving in freedom, and I am not referring to the freedom that each one does what they want, or that there is no fidelity or commitment, but that true love is the freedom and happiness of the other. And that should be the main thing, not to feel that the other person belongs to you or you have to hook up in some unhealthy way. I think that when you can laugh with a person, make fun of your shortcomings or when you can be surprised by the beautiful things in life and overcome the negative ones; that’s love to me. It’s not that “I’m with you, so you belong to me and we have to be always until death do us part because that’s how it has to be”. If it comes to that, how nice, you did it. There are a thousand ways to love and, sometimes, not necessarily the time, the duration or to publish your love; makes it more solid.
defends himself
―Magaly Medina just issued a report in which she indicates that your voice betrayed you in one of your presentations. Do you take care of your vocal chords?
-Of course. As you will understand the weather is not so favorable. That day he was a little hoarse, but if you ask the public, I think he had a great time. If it had been a bad show, it would have sounded bad. They wouldn’t have enjoyed it. You know how Magaly is. (Those from their program) went to see the show, they were happy, they interviewed me, they didn’t comment on anything, but I myself said “excuse me if I have a little cold” and they grabbed onto it, they didn’t even grab onto something that sounded.
―Why didn’t you clarify?
―In this environment it is better to remain silent, because any little thing is about turning negative or controversial news. But we are above that. I think that even Magaly herself has been quite kind to me. If you listen to the new thing that I have recorded, you will rather realize that there has been a maturity in the voice. I think I’m singing better than before. What is reflected is a more mature voice, with more power and more nuances. That criticism does not go much with reality. In any case, I prefer that the public decides it, it is the one that pays the entrance to go see me.
