US actor Jay Pickett died suddenly last Friday while shooting his new movie in Idaho. Pickett, who was 60, was most famous for playing detective David Harper in ‘General Hospital’ and Frank Scanlon in the spin-off ‘Port Charles’, was on the set of the western movie ‘Treasure Valley’ and “died while he was on horseback “.
Director Travis Miller confirmed the “shocking tragedy” on the film’s official Facebook page. “Many of you have already heard about the tragedy that occurred two days ago. Jay Pickett, our protagonist, author, producer and creator of this film died suddenly while we were on set preparing to shoot a scene,” he wrote. Miller explained that there is still “no official explanation” for his death at the moment, but added, “it looks like it was a heart attack.”
“Everyone present tried with all their might to keep him alive” but for the 60-year-old actor there was nothing to do. “Our hearts are broken and we grieve for his family, devastated by this shocking tragedy,” continued Miller.
Pickett was born in Spokane, Washington on February 10, 1961, and grew up in Caldwell, Idaho. He earned his bachelor’s degree in acting from Boise State University and then a master’s degree from UCLA. Pickett’s television appearances include the miniseries’ Rags to Riches’ and roles in hugely popular TV series such as’ Mr. Belvedere ‘,’ Perry Mason ‘and’ Matlock ‘.
In 2006, Pickett replaced actor Ted King as Lorenzo Alcazar on the soap opera General Hospital, the parent series of ‘Port Charles’ (which he has also starred in since 1997). In 2007, Pickett rejoined the cast of ‘General Hospital’ as Detective David Harper.
He was a sportsman and also loved to ride a horse. Pickett and his wife, Elena, resided in California. The two had two daughters, Maegan and Michaela, and a son, Tyler.
