Iraq still has a minimal chance of reaching the World Cup in group A of the qualifying series in Asia. Place three in the group is now in the hands of United Arab Emirates. Iraq is two points behind. Place three still gives the right to first a play-off in Asia and then an intercontinental play-off for a ticket for the World Cup. Advocaat was on the bench at six World Cup qualifiers. His team, which has to play the home games in Qatar, drew four times, lost against Iran and South Korea.
Advocaat started in Iraq in August after he was a trainer of Feyenoord for a year, his (provisional) last job as a club trainer. Before that, Advocaat recently worked for Sparta, FC Utrecht and the Dutch national team. According to a spokesman for the Iraqi Football Association, assistant Zeljko Petrovic will take over the duties of Lawyer for the time being.
